Facing labor shortages and scheduling constraints, two C.D. Smith superintendents and a project engineer turned challenge into opportunity. They engineered a plan to form, pour and lift tilt-up precast walls directly on-site. The result: a smaller crew, a shorter schedule and a more efficient build.
When two seasoned superintendents and a project engineer collaborate, innovation follows. On a recent project, the team faced challenges due to labor shortages and tight scheduling windows. Instead of defaulting to traditional methods, they looked for a better way to build.
THEIR IDEA: To overcome these obstacles, they devised a plan to fabricate and install tilt-up precast walls on-site.
The team engaged a structural engineer to design the wall panels and hoist connections. Both state and county officials approved the alternative approach, validating the plan as safe, compliant and efficient.
With all systems approved, the walls were formed, poured and cured right on the jobsite before being lifted into place.
It was a true win-win using practical innovation that balanced efficiency with precision and reinforced what C.D. Smith is known for: solving complex challenges through collaboration.
At C.D. Smith, innovation and problem-solving aren’t occasional successes, they’re part of what we do every day. From self-perform capabilities to prefabrication and Project Plus planning tools, every solution is built around smarter, faster, safer delivery.
