Port Washington Public Safety Building Construction Project Updates
Port Washington Breaks Ground on New Public Safety Building
A Milestone for Community Safety, Service and the Future
Port Washington, WI—On May 6, 2025, the City of Port Washington celebrated a major milestone in its commitment to public safety and community development with the official groundbreaking of the new Public Safety Building.
City officials, community members, and local leaders gathered on the northwest corner of County Hwy LL and State Hwy 33 to celebrate the start of construction on a shared facility that will house both the Police and Fire/EMS Departments.
Investing in Safety. Planning for Growth.
The new Public Safety Building is an investment in the people who protect and serve the community. As Port Washington continues to grow, city officials recognized the need to replace outdated facilities and centralize public safety services. Currently, the Police and Fire Departments operate out of separate, aging buildings.
Project Highlights + Construction Goals
Designed with the modern needs of law enforcement and emergency response in mind, the Public Safety Building will include:
- Joint headquarters for the Police and Fire/EMS Departments
- Faster emergency response times through centralized operations
- Combined-use facility for efficiency and interdepartmental coordination
- Up-to-date dispatch and communication technologies for today’s public safety standards
- Improved traffic flow and access for emergency response vehicles
- Energy-efficient systems for long-term sustainability
- Future-ready infrastructure to support population growth and safety needs
The site location and building design were strategically selected to enhance community access and optimize service delivery. This project is a model for public sector project management in Wisconsin, showcasing best practices in commercial construction, stakeholder engagement, and municipal planning.
Community Support and Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony began at 3:30 PM, and Mayor Ted Neitzke opened the event by highlighting the years of planning and collaboration that brought the City to this moment. Following the Mayor’s address, Common Council President Dan Benning acknowledged the teamwork that made this milestone possible.
The groundbreaking was well attended by:
- Port Washington’s Common Council members
- The Police & Fire Commission
- Executives and staff from both departments
- Local stakeholders, residents, and community leaders
Photographs captured the excitement as city officials, department leaders, and staff took turns with ceremonial shovels, marking the official start of construction.
Building the Future, Together
As the foundation is poured and steel begins to rise, so too does the City’s promise to its residents: to be prepared, united, and purposeful in building for the future. This project reinforces Port Washington's commitment to thoughtful planning, long-term investment, and responsible project management for a safer, stronger, future-ready city—all while keeping public service at the center of it all.
Looking Ahead
Construction is set to begin immediately. City officials plan to provide regular updates as the project progresses, keeping the community informed and engaged every step of the way.
