The Future of Wisconsin Construction: Building Careers in Skilled Trades

Written by Molly Haack | Jul 9, 2025 1:39:11 PM

Connecting with the Next Generation of Tradespeople

Masons, ironworkers, carpenters, and finishers are the backbone of construction, laying solid foundations, shaping structures, and bringing the fine details to life. Their work is more than labor; it's craftsmanship. Yet today, there is a shortage of young talent entering the trades.

With many skilled workers in their 50s and 60s nearing retirement, the industry is struggling to fill the gap with the next generation of builders.

The Reality of the Trades

The misconception that trade work is simply hard labor has created a significant barrier for young people considering construction as a profession. In reality, careers in the trades offer:

  • Competitive wages: Many trade roles start at $60K-$100K+ without the burden of student debt.
  • Career growth: Trades professionals often advance from apprentices to journeymen, foremen, superintendents, project managers and more.
  • Job security: Skilled trades are recession-resistant and in demand.

Bridging the Gap

At C.D. Smith, we recognize the urgency of closing this workforce gap. By allowing students to experience hands-on learning and interaction with real-world construction professionals, we hope to ignite interest and build career pipelines.

By giving students the chance to witness the pride and craftsmanship that comes with skilled trades, we hope to inspire a new generation to pick up the hammer, torch, or trowel.

Building a Path Forward

The next generation of builders is out there. Our responsibility is to connect them to the work that will shape the future — one brick, beam, and blueprint at a time.
