Women in Construction: Kellie Ropers
What led you to the construction industry?
My dad was a custom home builder. I grew up watching him work to create beautiful homes and the impact those homes had on his clients' lives. I knew I wanted to work in an industry that would continue to thrive across generations to come.
What has been the most surprising part of being a woman working in the construction industry?
The overall quantity of women in the industry. Even when I started almost 19 years ago I was surprised by this. We're only growing in quantity! It's a very rewarding career that we need to be promoting to young talent (not just women).
What is your favorite part of your career?
The constant change. Every project is different. I also love the closure that comes with the end of each project. It is very rewarding to move clients into their new space and seeing how they use their building.
What advice would you give someone starting out in the construction industry?
This career can be very fun, rewarding and stressful. Be sure to take time to enjoy what you're doing and the impact you're making on people's lives. Every so often I look at my old projects and am utterly amazed at the sheer quantity of people I have impacted, not only the clients and end users of the buildings but also the tradespeople I have worked with along the way.
