On Monday, August 22nd, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the reconstruction of the Kids Coulee Playground at Myrick Park.
Nearly three decades ago, thousands of people came together to build Myrick Park, and it has since become a staple in the area. The community asked that the look and feel of the wooden playground structure stay consistent with how it's been since 1994.
The first phase of the renovation includes replacing the wood with new planks. The City of La Crosse is still seeking public input on the second phase of the project.
Given the significance of the facility in the area, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is heavily involved in the much-anticipated upgrade and members of the Eagle Sports teams were in attendance at the ceremony. UW-La Crosse Director of Athletics Kim Blum hopes that student-athlete interest and involvement in the project exemplifies the importance of being active in the community and is something that alumni carry with them long past graduation.
More than a dozen area businesses are donating resources for the improvements. Project Manager Nick Beil participated in the groundbreaking, and C.D. Smith Construction is excited to contribute to the Kids Coulee playground at Myrick Park as part of continuing to make La Crosse a great place to live, work and play.

The Kids Coulee Playground at Myrick Park is a beloved community landmark in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After nearly three decades of use, the playground was in need of a renovation. In August 2022, the City of La Crosse began a two-phase project to restore and upgrade the playground.
Year 1 Recap
The first phase of the renovation was completed in early summer 2023. This phase included replacing the wood planks on the playground structure. The city received many compliments on the restored playground, and residents were eager to see the space reopen.
Phase 2 Update
Phase 2 of the renovation is currently underway. This phase includes adding new playground equipment. The city has ordered the new equipment and is waiting for it to be shipped. The majority of Phase 2 is expected to be completed in fall 2023.
Anticipated Reopening
The city hopes to reopen the Kids Coulee Playground in spring 2024. The recognition sign for the project is complete and will be installed as soon as the Phase 2 fence is removed.
