Converting vacant administrative offices into a multi-use learning studio and clinic for young adults will fulfill the vision of the late Dr. Darold Treffert.
Dr. Treffert envisioned a place where untapped talent could be nurtured and life skills taught to exceptional minds. The Treffert Studio creates a space for neurodivergent young people to excel and develop their talents in video, technology, music and art.
“Looking at this empty building and seeing what it could become has been a project in the works for several years,” comments Matt Doll, PhD, Director of Community Based Services, SSM Health. “There has been interest in a studio for young adults since we opened the Treffert Center in 2016.”
Leasing the vacated building owned by Moraine Park Technical College and adjacent to the college will enhance the opportunities available for Treffert Studio students.
Complete interior renovation was needed, and adding a sprinkler system was challenging. A six-inch pipe needed to be installed from the public right away to the studio building.
The C.D. Smith team was up for the challenge and quickly adapted. Through preconstruction planning, the team determined the best pathway to avoid fiber optics and other underground utilities.
The Treffert Studios features six private clinic rooms for individualized care, a culinary café, activity and art space, five small group collaboration areas, and a full theatre with connecting audio, visual and soundproof recording studio.
