Horicon holds school groundbreaking

District officials thank community at Friday ceremonial event

HORICON — The sun shone brightly Friday as Superintendent Rich Appel welcomed a large crowd to the Horicon School District’s groundbreaking ceremony.
Voter turnout was high last April as two school referendum questions were approved by more than 61 percent.
The yes vote allowed for infrastructure improvements and the construction of a new elementary school attached to the junior/senior high school. District administration will move to that site as well.
Horicon’s Van Brunt Elementary School was sold for $1.6 million in September to The Commonwealth Companies. They will take possession following the 2019-20 school year.
Appel addressed the student body, saying he hopes they will remember this moment as they grow up.
“Close to a year ago, this community voted to pay $26.5 million to build these schools for our future,” he said. “Please show them gratitude and respect for this gift as this place will truly be something special for all of us to attend.”
Appel thanked the school board members for “taking the risk and pushing this project forward.”
Board of Education President Tina Streblow said the project is set to be completed by August 2020.
“This project will not only bring the schools closer together in proximity, but also closer together in a mission as well,” she said. “This campus, being one campus and being one mission concept, will unite us even more and make us even stronger as a Marshman community.”
Clint Selle of Bray Architects and Mitch Kidd of C.D. Smith Construction also thanked school staff and the city of Horicon for their time and effort and for putting trust in their companies.
“Included in the principles and values of the Horicon School District is an acknowledgement that the responsibility for education is an active partnership among schools, students, families and all members of our community,” said Horicon Mayor Jim Grigg, who also serves on the school board. “Today’s groundbreaking illustrates the commitment of this community in investing in our future.”
The afternoon’s events concluded with the board of education, administration, members of the design team and student representatives Charlie Hintz and Jaime Anderson grabbing golden shovels and breaking ground.
The Horicon High School band then played a rousing rendition of the school’s fight song and Appel told everyone to have a great spring break.
