Odds of dying from sunstroke?
What are the odds of you dying from sunstroke? According to the National Safety Council, the lifetime odds of death from sunstroke in the United States 1 in 8,912! Which means, death from sunstroke is more probable than dying from sharp objects (1 in 28,000), cataclysmic storms (1 in 31,394) or lightning (1 in 218,106).
A construction site can be a dangerous place in the summertime if crew members aren't careful. Rising temperatures, sun exposure, warmth from protective clothing and physical exertion can create a potentially deadly combination for construction workers.
When the body is exposed to more heat than it can handle, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can escalate rapidly, leading to delirium, organ damage and even death. It's important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion, including pale skin, muscle cramps, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and/or rapid heart rate.
The good news is heatstroke can be prevented! Staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water is key. Work shorter shifts and take breaks often to adjust to the heat. Most importantly, look out for your co-workers, making sure they are taking breaks and staying hydrated. If you start noticing a crew member exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, take action immediately.
