Key Takeaways

  • Construction projects in residential neighborhoods affect more than schedules and buildings.
  • The SSM Health Cancer Care expansion team created an opportunity to build goodwill with neighboring residents.
  • Small gestures helped strengthen trust and community connections.
  • Building relationships remains central to how projects are delivered.

When Construction Comes to the Neighborhood

Every construction project is different. Logistics, budgets, schedules, and the unique nuances of each location. But when the work unfolds in a residential neighborhood, the stakes go beyond blueprints and deadlines. The rhythm of daily life, traffic patterns, noise, and the inevitable disruptions become part of the equation. At C.D. Smith, our crews know that being mindful of these impacts is not just good practice; it's a responsibility.

A Special Opportunity on Eastgate Place

During the expansion of the SSM Health Cancer Care facility at Eastgate Place and Division Street in Fond du Lac, our team faced a special opportunity: sharing an access road with long-time residents.

The holidays approached, and the project's seasoned superintendent, Matt Leonard, saw an opportunity to turn a potential inconvenience into a moment of connection. We spread some joy with our neighbors to show goodwill, understanding, and inclusion. Each resident received a gift bag and a note of appreciation.

Building Relationships Is Part of the Work

The response from the residents was warm and receptive. What could have been a source of friction became a chance to build trust and community. It was a reminder that there's more to construction than just building buildings. Building relationships is at the core of who we are.

"I live on Eastgate Place and I just want to thank you for the popcorn you gave us for Christmas. My husband is thrilled with the cap. It was so awesome of you to think of us. The Cancer Center is coming along well. Can hardly wait to see it finished." Mr. & Mrs. Schmidt, Happy Neighbors
