Using the Right Tool
Each tool that’s manufactured has an intended use, so using any tool in a way that it’s not designed for, not only affects the safety aspect but also the amount of effort needed to “try to make do.” For example, if you’re using too long of a screwdriver instead of one that is of an appropriate length, when applying downward pressure while twisting, it can cause the screwdriver to slip off of the screw and because of the amount of force being applied. The tip off the screwdriver could potentially stab or cut yourself or another person that is helping with the task. Be safe and take the time to use the correctly sized tool for each job.
The best hand tool is one that:
- Fits the job you are doing
- Fits the workspace available
- Reduces the force you need to apply
- Fits your hand
- Can be used in a comfortable work position
When the correct tool is used, you reduce the risk of unexpected movement, keeping yourself and others on your crew safe.
