Columbus School District Celebrates Groundbreaking on Improvements to Area Schools

COLUMBUS, Wis. - April 19, 2021– Columbus School District, along with partners C.D. Smith Construction and Bray Architects, celebrated a groundbreaking on Wednesday, April 14, a major milestone in the District’s initiative to improve and transform learning opportunities for area students. Groundbreaking ceremonies occurred at both the elementary school and high school to kick off construction for the additions and renovations.

The ceremonies were attended by Columbus School District Superintendent, Annette Deuman; School Board Representatives (present and past), Bill Braun and Cindy Damm; Incoming Columbus Mayor, Mary Arnold; C.D. Smith Construction SVP, Greg Sabel; CFAC Representative, Lori Galston; and Bray Architects President, Matt Wolfert.

Marking the first substantial facilities improvement project at Columbus School District since the 1980s, additions totaling 60,000 sq. ft. and renovations totaling 59,600 sq. ft. will provide 21st Century and STEAM learning opportunities for all students. Columbus Elementary School improvements will result in a “like new” school with a major addition including classrooms, a cafeteria, and new gymnasium and renovations that will touch almost all areas of the existing school.

These projects are only possible because of a community-led process that identified needs, explored solutions, and eventually recommended the scope of the successful referendum. The projects are scheduled to be completed in August 2022.

Other Information

“Six years of community conversations, incorporating voices of parents, students, business owners, community members and staff, along with community-wide surveys and the work of the Community Facilities Advisory Committee, led us to this historical event. The District is greatly appreciative to have a community that values and supports children, education, and future thinking. This day is a proud moment in Columbus Cardinal history.” Annette Deuman, Columbus School District Superintendent

“It is a pleasure to be selected as the construction manager on this exciting project. The Columbus school and community has a vision, and our job is to bring that vision to life and offer the ultimate construction experience for the students, faculty and all involved.” Greg Sabel, SVP, C.D. Smith Construction.

“Columbus School District is committed to preparing students for the challenges and opportunities that will arise from the changing technologies and economies of the future. Active learning offers a path to develop the skills needed in the digital age, and Bray is honored to be a partner in helping the District design educational spaces that support their goals.” Matt Wolfert, President, Bray Architects

Our Sustainability

Our corporate headquarters represents how we've set the next-generation standard for high-performance building design, construction and operations. Discover more by going to our website's OUR SUSTAINABILITY page or scrolling down to see how we're living green with LEED gold.

We're proud of the sustainable design and construction that went into our new headquarters. Key sustainable features include:

Powered by Solar

Atop of our new headquarters sits a 94kW ballasted solar photovoltaic system. The system features five SolarEdge Technologies Inc. inverters and (294) REC Group 320w modules. It is projected to offset an estimated up to 39.1% of our electric energy consumption. That’s saving over 93 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year!

Daylight Harvesting

Floor to ceiling, energy-efficient windows throughout the C.D. Smtih headquarters optimize daylight to reduce energy consumption by offsetting the amount of electricity lightly needed to properly light spaces in the building.

Automated Building Controls

Tracking and metering systems allow for decreased operating costs, enhanced system performance, energy savings, increased comfort and increased building infrastructure control.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

Reusable cups are located in cafes. Recycling Stations are located throughout the building, along with bottle filling stations. Office employees are making a valiant effort to go paperless.

Prairie in Progress

As a part of our green initiatives, C.D. Smith is practicing sustainable landscaping. Native planting takes two to three years to develop and requires maintenance for the plants to successfully establish. Maintenance may include mowing, weed management, and prescribed burning. The land surrounding the building will look different throughout the season and every year.
