Tradition + Innovation.
We knew we wanted a building that embodied tradition and innovation,” Dana Johnson, VP Corporate Real Estate at Fastenal, explains. “Our original concept was a steel frame building that had a century-old feel that would blend into the historic Winona skyline.”
During the planning stages, C.D. Smith worked closely with Fastenal and The Kubala Washatko Architects (TKWA) to understand the project’s vision and goals. With a growing focus on building sustainability and advancing occupants’ health and well-being, the C.D. Smith project team, led by Cory Henschel, Project Executive for C.D. Smith, proposed an alternative mass timber frame to achieve the look, feel and innovation Fastenal desired.
“We were surprised by the proposal to build a mass timber frame for the same budget as a steel frame,” Dana says. “But Cory believed they could make the numbers work to deliver us a mass timber building that was sustainable, innovative, employee-focused and within budget.”
Intrigued by the benefits of mass timber and a promise to be within budget, Fastenal moved forward with the alternative design. “It’s fascinating to learn about biophilia in architecture,” Dana shares. “The wood gives our new building energy and a vibe of its own. It has also promoted bigger thinking and innovation. So much so, that we are now looking at how to incorporate things we’ve learned on this project into our other locations.”
The final design reflects an environmentally conscious building with timeless characteristics that pay homage to the downtown riverfront area, including locally sourced Winona stone and mixed media building materials. Up close, modern features tout Fastenal’s manufacturing and supply capabilities. From exposed X-bracing right down to every single nut and bolt, Fastenal products can be seen throughout the building.
“I have to say, I am truly impressed by C.D. Smith. They kept their word to being on budget. They were open and transparent with us throughout the process, always keeping us informed and including us in crucial conversations. And now we have a beautiful, one-of-a-kind building that encompasses everything we envisioned.” Dana Johnson, VP Corporate Real Estate (Retired in 2021), Fastenal
C.D. Smith was hired as Construction Manager for the construction of Fastenal’s new downtown Winona office, located along the city’s historic Mississippi riverfront.
The multi-story office building will have immediate capacity for 400-600 people, with room for future expansion. The building’s environmentally conscious design features timeless characteristics that pay homage to the downtown riverfront area, including locally sourced Winona Stone, mixed media building materials and river views from each level.
