Industrial Expansion for Baker Cheese: Built to Grow 

When a fire caused extensive damage to AMPI’s facility in Portage, C.D. Smith Construction was called to assist not only with the rebuild, but also with rethinking the configuration of the manufacturing plant to make it better. The project included 47,070 square feet of alterations within the existing cheese-processing facility, resulting in a final building size of 219,797 square feet.

Moving 60,000 pounds of production equipment

A signature achievement involved relocating two 30,000-pound casting lines. Crews created an opening in the exterior wall, constructed a temporary platform and skated the equipment out of the building before lifting it with a crane and transporting it across the plant. The move was completed without disrupting production.

The project also required extensive shoring for multiple openings and a significant section of the roof.

One of the greatest challenges was performing heavy demolition and major renovations without disrupting ongoing cheese production in adjacent areas. C.D. Smith used highly coordinated sequencing, temporary wall barriers and negative-pressure controls to help plant operations continue safely and without contamination.

C.D. Smith self-performed cast-in-place concrete, rebar, precast concrete, masonry, steel erection, carpentry and millwrighting. The project was completed on time and on budget.
