2025 Bed Build with Sleep in Heavenly Peace Gets 85 Kids Off the Floor
2025 Bed Build with Sleep in Heavenly Peace: 85 Kids Off the Floor
Earlier this month, C.D. Smith and the Fond du Lac community came together for the 4th Annual Bed Build with Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP). On January 17th and 18th, volunteers built 85 beds—surpassing the goal of 80 beds and ensuring that 85 children now have a safe and comfortable place to sleep. This effort reflects SHP’s motto: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town®.”
A Lifeline for Local Families
SHP is a national non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the hidden crisis of child bedlessness. Across the country, thousands of children don't have their own beds, resorting to sleeping on floors, couches, or makeshift arrangements.
SHP’s Fond du Lac chapter has been addressing this issue locally, delivering over 1,000 beds since its inception. The January Bed Build was particularly crucial as it replenished SHP’s dwindling stock during the winter months, allowing the chapter to continue delivering beds without pause.
Tom Otte, SHP Fond du Lac Chapter President, emphasized the importance of this event:
“This January indoor build really hits the sweet spot for us, as it is crucial to keeping us afloat until warm weather. With an over-a-bed-per-day delivery rate, we were just 22 days from running out of beds. Thanks to this build, we can keep going strong.”
Changing Lives One Bed at a Time
Each bed comes fully furnished with a mattress, sheets, comforter, and pillow, but the impact goes beyond providing bedroom furniture. A proper bed contributes to a child’s health, emotional well-being, and ability to thrive academically.
In addition to building beds, some volunteers joined delivery teams. Seeing the joy on the families' faces as they received their new beds was a reminder of why this mission matters.
Supporting the Mission Beyond the Build
In addition to building 85 beds, we presented the Fond du Lac chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace with a monetary donation in the days following the event. This contribution helps cover essential costs like mattresses, bedding, and tools, ensuring SHP can continue its mission of providing children with a safe and comfortable place to sleep.
A Growing Need
The need for beds in Fond du Lac County remains high. As children age and need their own beds, families move into the area, and the chapter expands its geographic reach, the demand for beds continues to grow.
To date, the Fond du Lac chapter has delivered over 1,000 beds—an incredible milestone that highlights the ongoing need and the impact of community support. Notably, over one-third of these beds have been built through events like the annual Bed Build and Walleye Weekend builds hosted and sponsored by C.D. Smith.
