Building the Future: The Power of Diversity in Construction
Learning from the Past To Build the Future Together for Excellence in Construction
Did you know that gender-diverse companies are 25% more likely to achieve above-average profitability? This March, we celebrated Women's History Month and Women in Construction Week by highlighting the incredible contributions of women in our industry, both past and present—recognizing the unique talents and perspectives that bring value to projects and teams. As Holly Brenner, SVP at C.D. Smith, aptly put it, "Diversity isn't just an ideal—it's a competitive advantage."
A Legacy of Pioneers
In 1632, Elizabeth Wilbraham became one of the first women architects, drawing her own designs at a time when female architects were unheard of. Fast forward to 1872, and Emily Roebling stepped in to supervise the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill, proving that women could excel in roles of significant responsibility and technical skill. By 1898, Julia Morgan had not only graduated with a degree in civil engineering but also became an architect and construction supervisor for the Hearst Castle. In 1927, Elsie Eaves blazed a trail as a project manager, pioneering data collection and tracking spending trends on construction projects.
These stories aren't just historical highlights. They're a reminder of the talent and dedication needed to drive our industry forward, and we continue to build upon their efforts.
Building on a Foundation of Excellence
Today, women make up nearly half of the national workforce, yet only 11% are represented in construction. While the number of women in construction is increasing, they remain underrepresented, particularly in field careers.
This isn't simply about numbers. Every voice matters, and a team with varied backgrounds and experiences brings unique perspectives and problem-solving skills for tackling modern construction challenges.
Empowering Future Generations
We are committed to empowering the next generation of construction leaders. Through youth apprenticeship programs and hands-on learning, we provide invaluable opportunities for young individuals to develop their skills and explore their passions. These programs offer a direct path to a fulfilling career in the trades, ensuring that a legacy of building excellence continues.
Diverse Roles and Contributions
Women are making significant strides in both field and professional roles. From working on jobsites to managing projects and mentoring young talent, their contributions are helping to shape a more inclusive and innovative industry. Teams that embrace diversity are more likely to achieve above-average profitability due to the varied perspectives and problem-solving skills they bring.
Looking Forward: A Future of Excellence
At C.D. Smith, our vision is to build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute their unique talents. We remain committed to excellence, integrity, and the power of diverse perspectives. Together, we create an environment that promotes a culture of growth, collaboration, and innovation for a future of construction excellence filled with endless possibilities.
