Education Construction
In October 2016, the Columbus School District kicked off its Launching A New Legacy journey. Community members, parents, students, teachers, business leaders, government officials and others gathered in a three-day event to explore and analyze what had been done, the current state and help determine what the future would look like for the District.
Addressing the District’s facility needs was the number one priority identified by the planning team. The group established a goal to create a community campus by building needed facilities and amenities. To achieve this goal, the District identified clear action steps, including developing a Community Facility Advisory Committee charged with reviewing facility needs and financial data to recommend a plan to address these needs.
C.D. Smith was selected to support the District’s facilities planning efforts. After analyzing the cost, schedule and impact of multiple facility improvement options, the Committee moved forward with a plan to renovate and build additional space at
the elementary and high schools. In a community-wide survey, 67% of residents expressed their support of the plan, and in April 2020, voters supported a $35 million referendum that addressed the most pressing facilities’ needs.
A groundbreaking celebration was held in April 2021. In September 2022, the Columbus School District kicked off the school year in their new and improved spaces for students, staff and the community to enjoy for generations to come.
PROJECT FEATURES:
» Addressing most pressing building infrastructure needs at all three schools, including plumbing, heating/ventilation, electrical, etc.
» High school addition and renovations to improve Career Tech Ed (shop), art, band/choir, library, cafeteria/kitchen and weight/fitness rooms
» Elementary addition (including a secure entrance, classrooms, a cafeteria/kitchen and a 2-court gym) and renovations to bring 3rd, 4th and 5th grades back to the elementary school
» Land purchase for future development of a school and/or outdoor athletic and recreation spaces
