Buzz Mailbag question #3: What's that digging on riverfront?

Reader question: Something is happening between that new Marriott down on the river and the apartments. There’s a big hole in the ground. What is it?

Answer: That’s the start of Willow, RiverHeath’s largest mixed-use apartment/commercial building to date. Construction is estimated at $25 million.

The project was announced last year, but didn't get fully underway until now.

"We did some grading work last fall and could have started construction, but then we would have delivered in the fall. We've always tried to deliver apartment buildings in April and May. That's the perfect time," said Mark Geall, principal of Tanesay Development, which owns RiverHeath.

"It will be complete in May 2020, and people will be moving in in June," he said.

RiverHeath is a residential/commercial development on Appleton’s riverfront between the College Avenue Bridge and Telulah Park. It has townhouses, two apartment/commercial buildings and a Courtyard by Marriott hotel.

Willow will be a little more than twice the size of either of the existing RiverHeath apartment buildings, Prairie and Evergreen, and it will take longer than the other buildings to complete. It has six stories compared to their four.

“Willow will be 110 units — a mixture of studios, one, two and three bedrooms — with underground parking, office, retail and entertainment areas for residents,” Geall said.

A one-bedroom apartment will start at about $1,000 a month. Corner units overlooking the water, the most desirable, "are all but leased" he said.

Meanwhile, Evergreen and Prairie buildings are effectively full, "particularly Evergreen where we take dogs."
