Reimagining Historic Architecture: A Landmark in Madison's Urban Landscape
Bakers Place, currently under construction, is a multifamily development set to introduce 206 luxury apartments to Madison's growing landscape. This project showcases the refurbished charm of a 1908 bakery.

The innovative 14-story, 164,707 SF complex will feature studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units alongside 8,400 SF of mixed-use retail space. Partially constructed with exposed mass timber, the apartments will also be finished with premium fixtures, finishes, and cutting-edge technologies.
Expertise in Mass Timber Construction
Dane Bernau, Vice President at C.D. Smith, remarks, "We have been building with mass timber for nearly a decade. From corporate offices to apartment buildings, the use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) is increasingly prevalent, and our team's expertise in this area is well-established."
C.D. Smith self-performed work on structural concrete, steel erection, CLT erection, masonry, and rough carpentry.

LEED Certification and Environmental Stewardship
Nate Helbach, founder and CEO of Neutral, developer of Bakers Place, notes, "We're adhering to LEED Building Standards, and will achieve LEED silver for this project. Our firm's goal is to build innovative living solutions that coexist with environmental stewardship, and Bakers Place is our catalytic project to do just that."
Green Roofs Go with Success in Mass Timber Construction
Further enhancing sustainability efforts, the development will incorporate green roofs to aid in stormwater management. Helbach adds, "Choosing C.D. Smith as general contractor for Bakers Place was an obvious decision. They're local, align with our values, and have years of proven success in mass timber construction."
