Over the last decade, we have seen rising challenges in the construction industry. From labor shortages and supply chain bottlenecks to astronomical increases in material pricing, the construction industry has become more agile than ever.
“When I started 36 years ago, estimates were made manually with pen and paper,” Darin Garbisch, Senior Estimator, shares. "A lot has changed since then. For starters, we now use complex spreadsheets and formulas to calculate projects. Not only does it make an estimate more accurate, but if a number needs to be changed, it is incredibly efficient to adjust the estimate without reworking all the calculations. But beyond that, we have better quality data that consistently allows us to comprehensively and accurately make credible estimates.”
Despite technological advancements in estimating, no one could predict the volatility of the materials market. “We’ve gotten creative and even more adaptable,” Chad Richardson, Director of Estimating, shares. “We watch the markets daily."
C.D. Smith’s estimating team continues to rapidly adapt to the changing bidder’s landscape. But they are also looking ahead to developing and diversifying the next generation of C.D.
