In 1936, during the Great Depression, Charles D. Smith, an estimator and project manager for a construction company in Fond du Lac, made a modest living doing what he loved. With entrepreneurial spirit outweighing economic risks, Charles believed he could achieve more by taking matters into his own hands.
Establishing his own company, Charles worked relentlessly for five years before his son Donald decided to join the business and C.D. Smith and Son was born. The father-son team built their business on a tireless drive to exceed owners’ expectations. C.D. Smith grew through strong leadership and the dedication of Thomas D. Baker and Donald’s son Gary M. Smith. Today, Charles’ great-grandson, Justin A. Smith, leads the company.
Although C.D. Smith has grown into one of the Midwest’s strongest construction firms, it has stayed true to the family’s commitment. The company’s foundation remains in the people and the principle Charles built the company on—meaningful relationships, unprecedented quality in every aspect of its operations, and the pursuit of total customer satisfaction.

Eighty-five years later, C.D. Smith’s 600+ associates still believe in building strong relationships and delivering quality in every aspect of their work. Recently, C.D. Smith built a new corporate headquarters in Fond du Lac, WI, while expanding into three additional locations in Madison, Milwaukee, and La Crosse.
The foundation of C.D. Smith still rests on the same principle that it did eighty-five years ago. “My great grandfather started C.D. Smith Construction to provide the best value, quality, and service in the construction industry while building strong relationships. Today, 85 years later, we work hard to ensure that his philosophy remains our priority,” explains Justin Smith, current President and CEO.
