The transition from an aging movie palace to the venue you see today was by no means as seamless as the millwork makes it appear. The Warner Theater was built near the end of the movie palace boom. Crowds declined over the years, and it closed its doors in the 1990s. The theater sat vacant until 2017 when the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) set out to restore it to its original grandeur.
In addition to moving the 2nd Street wall to expand the stage, acoustic complexities and years of neglect presented challenging constraints. What was once an ornate movie house had fallen into disrepair. The millworker would need capacity, technology and talent to tackle such a large, complex project.
Skip Holschbach, Associate Principal at Kahler Slater, recognized the need for millwork design that was not only historically accurate and appropriate for the venue but also sensitive to the acoustics while accommodating the vast space of such a large stage. In partnership with Kahler Slater and C.D. Smith, ConceptWorks Inc. stepped up to the challenge of this unique, one-of-a-kind transformation. Sophisticated engineering knowledge and impressive manufacturing capabilities contributed to flawless execution - matching new to existing.
ConceptWorks' VP of Sales and Marketing, Joey Nelson, and Architectural Millwork Project Manager, Tony Ritchie, share more about their team's part in the transformation in this video feature.
MSO's Bradley Symphony Center is a remarkable accomplishment. Cheers to a future filled with inspirational performances at this landmark destination.
