C.D. Smith had THREE winning entries in the 2019 BUILD Wisconsin Awards: 7SEVENTY7, Marian University of Wisconsin's Dr. Richard and Leslie Ridenour Science Center Addition, and Masters Gallery Foods, Inc.'s Oostburg Facility.
The Dr. Richard and Leslie Ridenhour Science Center Addition project called for the transformation of the existing 50-plus-year-old science building into an open, student-focused learning center. The updated facility was necessary to accommodate growth in Marian University's STEM programs. Student and staff input was considered in the facility planning to ensure that the requirements of a 21st-century learning environment were met to both attract and retain students.
In addition to serving the students and staff of Marian University, the new facility will also be used for the Upward Bound Math and Science Program (UBMS). This program is designed to educate and assist local first-generation and low-income high school students with graduation, transition to college and the pursuit of post-secondary degrees in math and science.
C.D. Smith Construction would like to thank Marian University, along with its partner contractors, project team and skilled craft workers for making this project a success.

In a recent collaboration with Marian University, Chris Badtke, a Senior Project Manager at C.D. Smith Construction, highlighted a commitment to mentoring students and supporting the future of the construction industry.
The partnership with Marian University's Construction Management Program exemplifies dedication to the future of the industry and emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience and real-world learning for aspiring construction managers.
"We are proud to be a community partner in the Fond du Lac area," Badtke stated. "Our involvement in the Marian University Construction Management Program allows us to support diverse education for those interested in the trades by providing mentoring in pre-construction planning and hands-on management experience."
This "win-win" approach, as Badtke describes it, benefits both students and the construction industry. Students receive a well-rounded education while gaining practical experience, preparing them for successful careers. Meanwhile, C.D. Smith connects with the next generation of construction managers, a crucial step in an industry experiencing rapid advancements.
"Opportunities in the trades are expanding through technology, AI, and advanced innovations in state-of-the-art designs and sustainable building materials," Badtke explained. By working with students, C.D. Smith stays at the forefront of these developments.
The partnership isn't limited to mentorship. Currently, two project engineers from Marian University are interning on active C.D. Smith projects, gaining firsthand experience in the field. Additionally, C.D. Smith offers annual grants to students in the construction management field. These grants not only support educational pursuits but also strengthen the bond between the company and the academic community.
"It takes a village," Badtke emphasized, "and C.D. Smith Construction is fully committed." By investing in education and fostering a collaborative environment, C.D. Smith and Marian University are paving the way for a brighter future in the construction industry.
Dan Enz from Marian University echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the ongoing support and involvement of C.D. Smith in their program. This partnership exemplifies how industry and education can come together to create meaningful opportunities and drive progress in the trades.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – (Aug. 04, 2023) – The nurses are coming home and Marian University is celebrating with a Bash… a bash through walls, that is.
The Bash, which took place earlier this week, had Marian University executives, faculty, students, and even Sisters of St. Agnes, the order that founded Marian, taking part in the demolition. The event kicked off a renovation by C.D. Smith Construction that will transform the first and second floors of the Stayer Center on Marian’s main campus. The new home of Marian’s Nursing Program will feature state-of-the-art simulation laboratories, classrooms, and study areas for Nursing and other health professions. (Click the poster image below to see it at a larger size.) The previous location for Nursing was Marian’s Center for Health Professions building in downtown Fond du Lac.
“This move will be a significant convenience for nursing students, because it puts them just steps away from the Ridenour Science Center, where they have many of their core-curricular sciences courses,” said Cheryl Seelig, Program Director for Nursing at Marian University. “This helps us focus even more on providing students with a high-quality education in one place.”
Marian University, which has been training nursing and nurse leaders for almost sixty years, has one of the highest NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) passing rates in the state of Wisconsin at 96.67 percent.
The bash will also be an inauguration of a new program at Marian University – Construction Management. Marian President Michelle Majewski likes the idea of involving students in the bash. “We’re having both nursing students and construction managements students take part in the demolition, to symbolize Marian University’s many breakthroughs in higher education,” said Majewski. “The Nursing program shows our longevity and the Construction Management program shows we are constantly innovating.”
With the move, Marian University will put the building at 30 South Main Street in Fond du Lac up for sale. “That building had its time for us,” said Majewski, “But it will be better suited for a new owner.”
Marian University was founded in 1936 by the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes, a group of pioneering sisters, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
